Cutting costs in the kitchen

Meat

I’ve already mentioned that the most expensive thing you buy is meat.  So how do you eat steak on a shoestring budget?  Buy a roast and cut it into steaks and tips.  This takes a few extra minutes when you come home from the grocery store, but it’s well worth it.  I also buy pork loins and cut them into chops and tips.

Another thing is when you buy hamburger, buy whatever is cheapest and divide it into 1-2 pound sections.  Pop them in a freezer bag, and freeze them.  That way if you buy a 10-lb. tube of hamburger, you don’t feel like you have to use as much at a time.

One way to think outside the box is to check out the freezer section.  They will have pre-made hamburgers in there.  Occasionally, those are half the price per pound of hamburger from the meat section.  If you don’t want it for hamburgers, smush them up.

There are also fish sticks, frozen chicken, and ready-made dinners.  You have to check to see, but sometimes they are cheaper than the meats from the meat department.
